Performance  Space  and  Blacktown  Arts  Centre  present  the  premiere  of  Within  &  Without,  a  new   interactive  performance  that  explores  the  landscape,  history  and  culture  of  Manila.  Blurring  the lines between  theatre  and  visual  arts,  this  project  will  take  over  both  gallery  and  performance  spaces  of Blacktown  Arts  Centre  for less than two weeks only (June 22 - July 2).

Inspired  by  the  grand  scale  of  Manila’s  urban  sprawl,  Within  &  Without  searches  for  the  city’s  complex character.  It’s an  exploration  of how  capital  cities  through  their  architecture,  mythologies  and  histories represent  and  personify  the  cultural  identity  of  a  nation.

Audiences  will be  immersed  in  a  physical  reproduction  of  the  city  of  Manila  made  entirely  out  of recycled cardboard  boxes,  shadow  play  and  surround  sound  environments.

Within  &  Without  is  the  second  collaboration  between  contemporary  performance  maker  Deborah  Pollard, Filipino/Australian  artists  Paschal  Daantos  Berry  and  Valerie  Berry,  with  Manila-based multimedia  company Anino  Shadowplay  Collective;  their  first  collaborative  project  was  the  critically  acclaimed  The  Folding  Wife which  was  produced  by  Urban  Theatre  Projects  in  partnership  with Blacktown  Arts  Centre  in  2007  and toured  nationally  in  2010.
