One of Sydney’s hottest venues, The Ivy, played host to a fashion showcase by Maria de Guzman, co-founder of a new fashion brand, Sassy Dolls.

The Ivy is always buzzing on the weekend, but even more so last Saturday (January 20). Instead of the usual crowd, a group of fashionistas, media types and other VIPs lined up to go to Level 3.

Normally a dining area and bar, the entire floor was transformed into something else: on one side was the bar area where guests mingled, on another side was a hair salon set-up and in another corner was rows and rows of cupcakes.

Taking the entire length of the room right next to the glass wall was the makeshift runway where more than 28 models showcased the brand’s latest collection of swimwear, cocktail dresses and evening gowns.

Providing entertainment were RnB artist Daniel Ross, model and singer Ann-Maree Bowdler and the Brazilian dance group, Batucada Brasil.

The room was packed with more than 300 guests attending the showcase. Part of the ticket proceeds also went to White Ribbon, an organisation that works to prevent male violence towards women.

For Maria, the night was a culmination of months of hard work by the Sassy Dolls team and her business partner, Nani Zaini.

But ever a perfectionist, she wished she could have done more to prepare for the show. The models were supposed to hit the catwalk at 9.30pm but didn’t do so until half past 10.

Not that she had to worry. Between the cupcakes and canapes, the DJs playing the latest music, female guests lining up to get their hair done at the 'salon' and male guests making their best dance “Moves Like Jagger”, everyone was concentrating on having a good time.

The year 2012 might just be the year of Sassy Dolls.
