Marx Canoy’s FOOD FEAST, a Filipino-Australian cookbook created for the community and backed by the community, earned high praises from Senator Kate Lundy, the minister for multicultural affairs.
Senator Lundy gave a speech at the cookbook launch, held at the Bankstown Sports Club on Sunday, 9 June.
She told the audience, made up of community leaders, media and Canoy’s supporters, that the cookbook is exactly the kind of project that illustrates the depth and breadth of the country’s various cultures.
“FOOD FEAST is a wonderful testament to multiculturalism through cuisine.”
Senator Lundy wasn’t the only one impressed with the cookbook. Laurie Ferguson, MP, who was there to represent the PM Julia Gillard, thanked Canoy for widening the Australian knowledge on Filipino culture through food while Tanya Davies, MP, congratulated Canoy on his “superb collection of recipes”.Bryan Doyle, MP, member for Campbelltown, was also there to lend his support, endorsing the cookbook as another way to showcase the richness of Filipino culture.Completing the strong attendance of dignitaries was Philippine Consul General Anne Jalando-on Louis. On the night Consul General floated the idea with Canoy to guestspeak at a school in NSW to talk about Philippine cuisine.More than 50 guests attended the launch, including Filipino-Australian award-winning chef Neria Soliman, Great Chefs of Australia series publisher James Mussak and media outfits, including the Philippine Community Herald, InLife Magazine, Migrante and Ang Kalatas.
It was hosted by the Alliance of Philippine Community Organisations, Inc. (APCO Inc.) prior to their annual Freedom Ball held on the same date at the event. Founding APCO president, Dr. Cen Amores; current president Jhun Salazar; and advisers Dr Jimmy Lopez and Ruben Amores, were among those who have strongly supported the concept of a Filipino-Australian cookbook
“This cookbook wouldn’t be possible without the help of APCO and its affiliates … this is a dream come true for me,” said Canoy.
