Long before the internet acronym ROTFLMAO was invented, stand-up comic Jo Koy was already making notes on how to make people do just that, using his Filipino background as raw material.

US-based stand-up comic Jo Koy is back in Australia for his national tour, performing at the Enmore Theatre in Sydney this Sunday, November 18.

If you’ve seen him perform before, or viewed one of his clips on YouTube, then you’d be familiar with his brand of humour: lots of physical comedy and jokes that drew from his experiences growing up – raised by a Filipino mum.

Jo (short for ‘Joseph’) is Filipino-American but, as he puts it, he is not a Filipino comedian but a comedian who happens to be Filipino. And yes, there is something universal about his family-related jokes.

But c’mon, if you’re Filipino, his shows are irresistible. Talk about seeing your own life story come alive on stage. His skits around Filipino mums and grandmas are roll-on-the-floor-my-tummy-hurts funny.

A regular stint on hit TV show Chelsea Lately, multiple appearances at international comedy festivals and a standing ovation on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno are proof that Jo’s mum never should have worried that he didn't go for a ‘normal’ job. He’s doing just fine.

Check out these video clips where he tells The Australian Filipina more about his family upbringing, his influences and what fans can expect from his show.
