Ten young hopefuls vie for the top spot in an amateur singing contest launched to support the next generation of young talent within the Filipino-Australian community.

Sydney-based non-profit community association, Adhika, Inc. celebrates its fourth year with yet another project designed to provide the Filipino-Australian community a platform to showcase its rich and diverse culture.

The talent search ‘Hamon Sa Kampeon’ (Challenge to the Champion) revives a singing contest of the same name that FilPressSyd Group convenor Jaime Pimentel and other community leaders produced many years ago.

But the twist in the latest version of Hamon Sa Kampeon is that it called on the various community radio programs including Adhika Radio, Radio Dalisay, Radio Rizal, Radyo Filipino Australia and Sandigan Radio to attract contestants.

Slated previously to run in late December last year, the event will now be held on the 22nd of March (Sunday) at the Banksia Room, Dooley’s Catholic Club in Lidcombe. The program runs from 1pm to 3.30pm and will feature 10 contestants plus special guests, including Jasmine Henry and alternative Pinoy rock band 'Our Tribe'.

"As media practitioners, we want to use our community network to give young hopefuls an opportunity to showcase their talents. We hope this is just the beginning of a successful singing career for them and, who knows? We might discover the next Marlisa Punzalan through Hamon Sa Kampeon,” says Josie (Pines) Musa, overall coordinator & Public Officer, Adhika Inc. and Producer/Broadcaster of Adhika Filipino radio program.

Raising the bar even further, the singing contest will coincide with the launch of a CD featuring song cover recordings by each of the contestant, co-ordinated by Adhika Radio and singer/songwriter/producer Oliver Gadista from Gadista Music.

Proceeds from the CD and ticket sales will go towards Adhika’s ongoing projects including a library in the Philippines and Haiyan-related fundraising. To help with the fundraising, raffle tickets will also be sold with the major prize being a return-trip ticket to the Philippines.

The contest will be adjudicated by a panel of judges with singer and theatre artist Marcus Rivera as chair.

Winner of the 2015 Hamon Sa Kampeon will receive a Return Trip ticket to the Philippines. Contestants will each bring home a trophy of acknowledgment for their participation and an opportunity to perform at the various radio stations that are members of Adhika, Inc.

The event’s emcees are Sandigan Radio’s co-hosts Charles Chan and Michelle Baltazar.

Musa said that the Adhika Radio Team, which is the lead coordinator of the event, would like to thank all the participants, their parents and all the supporters of this year’s Hamon Sa Kampeon.
