Love the sun, sand and the beach? Me, too! But there’s a downside. Living in Australia, you’re more likely to get sunspots and premature skin ageing due to harmful UV rays that aren't quite as harsh in the Philippines.

But in winter, your skin gets some relief from the Aussie sun brought about by too many outdoor activities or beach parties, making it the perfect time to get rid of those unwanted blemishes on your face. So don’t get mad, get even. Even skintone, that is.

Tip #1 Cleanse, tone and moisturise

If you don’t have a skincare routine, it’s never too late to start. It’s not just about looking good but feeling good. Nothing like itchy, scratchy and super-dry skin during winter to ruin your day. There are plenty of products in the market but I use the Nutrimetics Restore facial cleanser-toner-moisturiser combo for intense hydration.

At the risk of spelling out the obvious, all you need to do is splash some water on your face and use a 20-cent size (or less) dollop of the cleanser, add a little bit of water and start scrubbing, gently, all over your face (use a facial scrub if you have one).

Remove again with water and then use a 10-cent (or more) size dollop or more of the toner and put all over your face, avoiding the delicate eye area (Note: you don’t need cotton balls to soak the toner with, just apply the toner directly on your face).

Then apply your eye crème (dab around the eye area but NEVER on your eyelids) and your moisturiser (with SPF during the day and the night crème on your face and neck before you go to bed).

Instead of the Restore range, you can also use the newly-launched White-Age range, which contains the age-old ingredient used by Chinese women over the centuries - peony flowers - combined with special ingredients to combat the effects of HEV (High energy visible) light, which is the light from computer screens and mobile phones.

Tip #2 Always wear sunscreen

Unless you are one of the rare few with skin that reacts badly to SPF, never leave home without sunscreen. There are several products in the market but I use the SPF15 that goes with my Nutrimetics Restore Day Crème SPF15 and I also use the Professional DD Crème and Corrector, which also has sunscreen. Better more than less!

Tip #3 Leave your pimples alone

I know how tempting it is but don’t do it. You’ll end up with bigger pimples or scars that are hard to remove.

Tip #4 Give yourself a glycolic peel

Once a week if you can. A weekly peel simply means that your protein serums or moisturisers will work much better. I use the Nutrimetics Ultra Care+ Facial Peel Crème, which has glycolic acid and can help reduce blackheads, too.

Tip #5 Hide those dark spots

While you’re waiting for your new skincare routine to work its magic, you can also use concealers, correctors and foundations. I use the Nutrimetics DD Crème and Corrector, the Liquid Cover smoothing concealer (medium) and my favourite ‘beauty secret’ product: the Nutrimetics Line Prime Instant Wrinkle Filler (I frown a lot and have premature lines around my forehead and this product is an absolute Godsend!)

When all else fails, consult a dermatologist. Sometimes, some dark spots and sunspots have been left to linger too long they might need that extra treatment. That is why prevention is better than the cure. When in doubt, never leave the house without sunscreen!
