Thirty four year old Fil-Aussie handball sensation, Bevan Calvert has recently made history in the handball world.  While there has been no mention given by the local media to a sport which has no huge following, this was not the case in the foreign media.  Various articles had featured Bevan on newspapers, tv and radio, social media [Facebook, Twitter and Instagram] and online podcast.

The handball arena in Europe has celebrated that not only was he the first Australian to be in the Champion Team THW Kiel, but also was in the Champions League with the team, and subsequently in a major competition the Supercup.   The discussions on him had  hit the front page, Facebook posts had been re-shared and Tweets had been re-tweeted.

THW Kiel has posted comments below on its website, Facebook page and Twitter account:

"He was Australia's first EHF Champions League player, now our Bevan Calvert is also the first handball player to win the Pixum Super Cup! On Saturday, Bevan had another special order: Bringing the trophy home safely. Job accomplished ! #WeAreKiel #OnlyWithYou #BevanAustralianForHandball".

(Un)informed Handball Tour commentator, Chris O'Reilly did a podcast interview of Bevan.  Their post was shared on social media platforms Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.  They commented in a post on September 29:

"The man at the centre of one of the best feel-good stories this season, Bevan Calvert, chats tous about his experience with THW Kiel and making history for Handball Australia."

In the interview also shares information about handball in Australia and the good work of the volunteers of Handball Australia to keep the sport going.  Listen to Bevan's interview through this link to the podcast

Appreciating the rare experiences and all the attention he was getting, Bevan said posted on his FB athlete's page:  "Thank you for an awesome month and a half THW Kiel!"

He also has expressed appreciation of the support by handball players, colleagues and groups, and all his family and friends around the globe.

The Australian Filipina hopes that Bevan's story will encourage our young people in the pursuit of their passion, and wishes Bevan the best in his chosen sport.
