During the lockdown, going out to go to your favourite salon to get your hair cut and styled was simply impossible prodding a lot of netizens to post how they tried to cut their hair. Like a lot of people, were you able to put a little more thought on what your hairstyle should be?

Here’s a list of things to consider when choosing your hairstyle to complement your face:

  1. Find out what your face shape is.

If your face has a wide forehead with your hairline forming a “widow’s         peak” in the middle, high cheekbones, and tapers to a narrow chin, you have heart-shaped face.

If your face is longer than it is wide with a prominent chin, you have an oblong face.

If your forehead is proportional to your chin and your cheeks are equidistant with prominent cheekbones, you have an oval face.

If your forehead and cheekbones are narrow and have a wide jawline, you have a triangular face.

If your face has a straight hairline which has the same width as the cheekbones and an angular jaw, then you have a square face.

If your face is wide as it is long with full cheeks and a softly rounded forehead and chin, you have a round face.

  1. Based on your face shape, find out what hairstyle suits you.

For an oval face, any shape can be word just as long as it doesn’t hang or cover your face or your eyes.

For a round face, you should be able to style your hair that allows height and volume on the top or crown to give the illusion of a narrower face shape. Longer hairstyles close to the cheek is advisable. For short hair, straight hair with bangs parted on the side would be better and for longer lengths, a middle part makes the face longer.

For square or rectangular faces, short to medium length hair with wispy forward falling hair with bangs swept to the side softens the straight lines  specially your prominent jaw.

For heart shaped faces, textured chin length hairstyles with side swept bangs or shoulder length cuts with wispy layers would be ideal. Avoid full hair styles like slicked back locks or short styles with heavy straight bangs that make your face look like an upside-down triangle.

For triangular faces, layered hairstyles will soften prominent jawline or straight long hair will taper the jawline. Avoid solid bob cuts (short) that bring more attention to the jaw.

For oblong faces, short to medium lengths without height is best suited for this type of face shape. Chin and shoulder lengths should turn under or kick in to add width. A straight across bangs with side parts works really well.

These hairstyles help draw more attention to the eyes and the lips which are the centrepieces of the face and can be further complemented by having the right colour – which we will discuss on our next article.

Knowing what you need provides for better decisions when comparing it with what you want. This also allows you to communicate better with your hair stylist to let them know exactly what you want.
