Mental Health Statistics: In recent years, the topic of mental health has become common in Australia and across the globe. On 5 October 2023, the Australian Bureau of Statistics released a summary of key mental health statistics, covering national and state estimates of mental disorder prevalence. The findings reveal that:
-
42.9% of individuals aged 16-85 have experienced a mental disorder at some point in their lives;
-
21.5% had a 12-month mental disorder, with anxiety being the most prevalent (17.2% of individuals aged 16-85); and
-
38.8% of those aged 16-24 had a 12-month mental disorder.
Although these statistics are a year old, they highlight the severe impact of mental health issues on individuals and their families. Mental health is intertwined with various socioeconomic factors, including access to services, living conditions, and employment, affecting not just the individual but their loved ones as well.
The Story’s Genesis: The topic of mental illness and its impact on families has deeply resonated with our Filipino Australian creatives, who are currently in the pre-production stage for the short film "Jojo Lost His Shoe."
During an interview with Radio Tagumpay on 11 August 2024, Felino Dolloso, the lead actor, producer, and director, shared that the story came to him on his way to work. Inspired by this idea, he reached out to Miles Paras, who eagerly joined the project, and Dianne Diaz, whom Felino believed would make a great producer. He also enlisted renowned screenwriter Rex Paragas to pen the script. Felino has collaborated with other actors from his previous films, including "The Trumpet Player," and has invited some of them to join him in this new endeavour.
