One to cross off your bucket list: enjoying halo-halo (mix-mix) at the plush surrounds of Café Mix at Sydney’s Shangri-La Hotel.

Until October 15, Shangri-La is home to a festival of Filipino food as part of The Sydney Morning Herald “Good Food Month” in October.

Three guest chefs from Makati Shangri-La, Manila will be coming to Sydney to create the lavish buffet-style spread themed "Flavours of the Philippines 2013".

Classic dishes such as kare-kare (oxtail stew in a rich peanut sauce), pork sisig (a punchy, vinegar-spiked appetizer) and chicken inasal (marinated chicken grilled over hot charcoal) will feature among the fiesta fare.

For those with a sweet tooth, a dizzying array of desserts will be on offer, alongside a native nipa stall serving halo-halo – the popular Filipino dessert of shaved ice with condensed milk and a colourful mix of sweet beans and fruits.

"I was there today (October 8). I'm salivating at the thought of it - the crunchiness of the thin lechon skin, the taste of the kare-kare with bagoong and the bangus dish, which was tasty and true to Filipino standard. It was definitely good value," said Rowena Baisa, one of the diners at Cafe Mix last week.

Flavours of the Philippines is hosted by the Philippine Department of Tourism and Shangri-La Hotel Sydney, with daily lunch and dinner sessions. To book, contact the Shangri-La at (02) 9250 6206 or email [email protected].
