June 12 marks the Philippines’ declaration of independence from Spanish rule in 1898 – a turning point led by heroes including Jose Rizal, Andres Bonifacio, and Emilio Aguinaldo. As the Philippines celebrates its independence, so too do Filipinos in Australia. Across Australia, there are celebrations of Philippine Independence that mark a significant event for Filipinos worldwide.
On 14 June 2025, the Filipino community in Gawler, South Australia, held a celebratory event. Organised by the Gawler Catholic Church Filipino community and the Adelaide Filipino Lions Club, the occasion was attended by community leaders, dignitaries, Lions Club members, and the Gawler Filipino community in recognition of the Philippines' rich history and cultural heritage.
Distinguished guests included Acting Mayor of Gawler Nathan Shanks, Member for Light/Deputy Member for Frome Tony Piccolo MP, Member for Spence Matt Burnell MP, Labor candidate for Light James Agness, and Philippine Honorary Consul to South Australia Carmen Garcia.
The celebration commenced with an Acknowledgment to Country, led by Adelaide Filipino Lions Club President Aisley Castigo-Hancock, followed by the singing of the Australian National Anthem led by Alexi Samonte, and the Philippine National Anthem, led by Marishiel Lingatong, which filled the atmosphere with pride and patriotism.
Community leaders delivered inspiring speeches, emphasising the importance of unity and resilience in the face of challenges. They also highlighted the achievements and contributions of Filipinos in South Australia and encouraged everyone to continue working toward a brighter future.
The event featured a cultural dance performance by Edwin and Janet Cedamon, Filipino poetry recited by Adelaide Filipino Ethnic School (ADFES) students, and traditional Filipino games, all of which provided a glimpse into the Philippines’ diverse cultural heritage. The highlight of the event was the ‘salo-salo’ showcasing Filipino delicacies, which added to the festive atmosphere and allowed attendees to savour the flavours of Filipino cuisine.
The celebration concluded with a Karaoke Competition spearheaded by the PBA FM 89.7 radio program ‘Tara Uli sa Pinas’. It was a fun activity as attendees enjoyed a variety of songs, and the audience sang along with the music.
The event not only commemorated Philippine history but also strengthened the bonds within the Filipino community, fostering a sense of pride and belonging among all who attended. As the festivities came to an end, the message was clear: the spirit of independence lives on, and the Filipino community remains united in its pursuit of progress and prosperity.
