A book that makes you laugh out loud from start to finish, writes MICHELLE BALTAZAR.

Every book is an adventure. How much pleasure you get from reading it relies on the author - the word play, the plot, and the twists and turns.

On all counts Jonas Jonasson delivered by the bucketloads. "The One Hundred Year Old Man Who Climbed Out The Window And Disappeared" is as funny and delicious to read as it sounds.

The one hundred year old

The one hundred year old

The story is set in Sweden (sort of) where the main character, the 100-year-old Allan Karlsson, wasn't so happy staying in an old folks home and decided to escape, through a window, in his bedroom slippers, and into the arms of a criminal (or three), a hotdog-stand owner and a woman with a pet elephant.

There's also the little fact that he used to work building bombs - an explosive career that brought him to the inner sanctum of the KGB and the CIA. Although whether he worked as a spy or not, and for which side, is really up to the reader!

"The One Hundred Year Old Man" is a fantastic read, particularly if you have a soft spot for books flavoured with world history (but no politics!).

Published in 2009, it became the most read book in Sweden in 2010, translated to 35 languages and has since sold more than eight million copies.

Millions of readers can't be wrong. A hilarious treat.
